Reporting to the Assistant Director of Care, a Registered Nurse will provide clinical nursing services to residents and assure personal nursing services to residents either through direct care or coordination of the activities of other categories of health workers.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Use nursing process to assess residents and to plan, implement and evaluate care
  • Prepare and administer medication
  • Document relevant information of flow sheets, progress notes, report books, message books, incident reports, etc; Tape an oral report or writes a report at change of shift; Maintain confidentiality of all of these
  • Perform prescribe treatment and supervise RPN’s, HCA’s and new and relief staff in performance of treatment assigned to them
  • Supervise HCA’s in care of residents
  • Assess sudden changes in resident condition and behaviour and contacts appropriate assistance including but not limited to: physician, ambulance, receiving hospital, next of kin of sponsor, person on call for administration
  • Orient and guide forgetful or confused residents
  • Transcribe and execute the medical prescription and seek clarification of same
  • Communicate with residents’ families to inform them of changes, incidents, hospitalizations, and needs with which they can help
  • Carry out clinical responsibilities which include but are not limited to: admission and annual health assessments of residents; preliminary review of lab results; medication reviews
  • Order, check, and store medication supplies
  • Assist with medical examination and rounds and may be required to act as resident advocate, interpreting resident signs and symptoms and explaining medical regimen and recommendations. Transcribes Doctor’s orders
  • May be requested to undertake special projects by the Director of Care (e.g. follow-up on dental reports, review and revision of procedures)
  • Care for psychosocial needs of residents, especially those experiencing difficulty
  • Work cooperatively with Unit Manager to review and revise work routines
  • All other duties as assigned by Assistant Director of Care and/or Director of Care

Qualifications

  • Current certificate from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred
  • Previous experience working in a similar setting preferred
  • Ability to solve problems using the nursing process
  • Ability to apply knowledge of nursing and the basic physical and social sciences to the work situation
