Organization Background: Belmont House (located near Bay/Bloor) is a charitable, non-profit, Christian home for seniors offering long term care and retirement living. For 170 years we have provided quality care to our residents in a safe and stimulating home environment. We are the "Seniors' Home of Choice" helping our residents maintain independence, choice, dignity and privacy.  Due to the Home’s current expansion, Belmont House is seeking a General Accountant.   Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Finance and Information Management (DOFIM), the General Accountant uses analytical thinking, sound judgement and problem-solving skills to support key deliverables of the finance department including the accounts payable function, tenant & resident billings, financial reporting, and payroll processing.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accounts payable function and the SageAP Automation software
  • Distribute all invoices (received by mail or email) to appropriate department for approval
  • Follow up with department leads regarding delays in approval of invoices for payment
  • Review invoices for proper approvals, mathematical and coding accuracy and issues cheques for payment
  • Create and maintain supplier accounts and follows up on missing invoices
  • Maintain up-to-date filing
  • Responsible for collecting and reconciling cash for tuck shop, front desk, dietary and various other sources. Provides change to the tuck shop & front desk as required
  • Work with the Senior Accountant to ensure all Resident/Tenant billings/charges are processed timely and accurately and information in Sage/PCC/CRM/POS terminal are up-to-date and accurate
  • Manage daily Resident/Tenant banking
  • Responsible for fixed asset management. Tracks capital projects and updates the Sage Fixed Asset module to record capital expenditure transactions and creates the monthly journal entry for depreciation
  • Prepare the Fixed Asset Continuity Schedule for the interim and year-end audits
  • Prepare monthly Investment Schedule and journal entries for GICs and Pooled Funds
  • Provide support during the annual audit
  • Backup to the Payroll Coordinator
  • Cross functional training with Senior Accountant
  • Assist and answer billing inquiries from residents and tenants
  • Ensure accuracy of resident & tenant banking and miscellaneous charges
  • Ad hoc reporting and other duties as assigned by the DOFIM
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Finance


  • Post secondary Degree/Diploma or equivalent professional experience with focus on accounting, business administration or commerce
  • 2-3 years of related work experience
  • Payroll experience, preferably in a unionized environment using ADP or Synerion Software
  • Previous experience with Sage 300/Accpac or similar accounting software
  • Strong knowledge of Excel and proficiency in other MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Good analytical skills and excellent attention to detail to reconcile various documents, detect discrepancies and process accurate payroll and accounting transactions
  • Ability to multi-task within a fast-paced environment
  • Able to demonstrate confidentiality and discretion when dealing with highly sensitive information
  • Proven ability to work independently or as part of a team

Belmont House offers a very competitive salary ($50,000 to $60,000 per year depending on the qualifications/experience of the candidate) with benefits and pension.
