Ways of Giving
Bequests
A bequest is a gift of personal property in a Will. A Will is the
legal document that tells your estate how to distribute all of your
assets. If you do not have a valid Will, the government will distribute
your assets according to a set formula, which probably is not what
you would have intended.
Lives change significantly every five years on average. Everyone
should take a close look, to make sure their Will reflects what
they really care about; our loved ones, friends and the causes we
care about. Here are some things to consider when putting together
your Will:
Use a lawyer to
execute your Will. The cost is small compared to the peace of mind
derived from knowing it is done properly. Both spouses must have
their own Wills;
Choose your executor(s)
carefully as they are the ones who will carry out your wishes;
Bequests can be
for specific amounts, percentages or the residue of your estate;
The needs of your
family and loved ones should be considered first;
Bequests to a charitable
organization in your Will produce significant tax benefits for your
estate.
Exact wording of a Bequest is very important. The most flexible,
far-reaching wording would be to leave a portion of your estate
to "The Belmont House Foundation ”.
